Symptoms of Early Pregnancy

Wondering if you are pregnant?

There are multiple early symptoms, and some can show up as early as one week after conception. Early pregnancy signs and symptoms can often be mistaken as PMS symptoms. Learn to recognize the symptoms and know when to take a pregnancy test to provide peace of mind.

Can I really have a symptom one week after implantation?

The answer is yes; the most common early sign is fatigue. This can be recognizable by the need to take an additional nap during the day, not having any motivation, or simply feeling exceptionally tired during the day despite a good night’s sleep. Fatigue occurs because progesterone rises quickly in a woman’s body after conception. It is very busy starting the work of building a placenta, and this requires a lot of energy. This is going to make you tired.

Other Common Symptoms

There are several other symptoms to watch out for, as they can also occur before a missed period. The most common symptoms include:

1. Mild cramping or pulling in lower abdomen.

2. A light spotting of blood (light pink or brown in color) and not enough to fill a pad.

3. The breasts can change and become very sensitive. This is caused by hormonal changes, so you may notice that they become tender, heavy, sore, and nipples darker in color.

4. Bloating is never fun, but this can be an early sign of pregnancy due to the progesterone slowing down digestion. As a result of the bloating, you may also experience constipation and the sensation of feeling full.

5. Nausea is a common symptom that can stay with you throughout your pregnancy, but it is also an early symptom. You may find yourself feeling queasy, having aversions to certain foods, vomiting, and a sensitivity to smells.

No two pregnancies are the same, and symptoms will vary.

When should I take a pregnancy test?

The most noticeable sign of early pregnancy is a missed period. If you have regular cycles and you miss your period, then you can take a pregnancy test after the first day of your missed period. If you are irregular but experiencing symptoms, then wait until 21 days after the point of conception. Taking a pregnancy test 1 – 2 weeks after your missed period will give you the most accurate results. A negative test result can occur from taking a test too early. If you feel that you are pregnant, wait a couple of weeks and take the test again.
